Remarks offered by the President of Global Volunteers
Mr. Bud Philbrook
Tour of An Shang Village School

Wednesday, 19 May 2004

Thank you Governor Wang Shuanhu for your welcome to Global Volunteers and your continuous cooperation and support for our cooperative project in An Shang.

It is a great joy for me to be back in An Shang. You have welcomed our volunteers into your homes with open arms and warm hearts during these past few years and I am very grateful to you for that.

This is a tremendous school you are building and Global Volunteers is proud to play a small part in its development. When it is finished it will be a state-of-the-art school and the students who will study here will be very fortunate for the education they will receive. This is an excellent example of the old saying that a group of ordinary people are collectively capable of extraordinary things.

As we drove into your community, I also noticed that you have built a new road in your village. It is a wonderful road and I know it will serve your community well. And I understand that a new system of the villagers’ committee has begun to function. That too is terrific! These are all significant achievements.I congratulate all of you for what you have accomplished in such a short time.

What pleases me most today is the symbolism of the two flags that fly over this wonderful structure known as Project Peace. These flags represent more than our two countries.Flying side-by-side, they represent genuine friendship between our people. Moreover, they represent the hope that each of us holds in our hearts – hope for lasting peace between our countries and growing friendship between our peoples.

In the spirit of that friendship I make this commitment to you today.Global Volunteers will continue to send teams of volunteers to serve An Shang, Fufeng County, and rural China as long as you continue to invite us.Your invitation is very important because you offer us the unique opportunity to meet you and get to know you – local farmers, teachers, and students – as we learn about the values of family, community, and harmony in rural China.By working with you on Project Peace we have been able to learn from you.It is through our serving this village that has allowed the local people to become teacher and the volunteers to become student.

We have also offered you the opportunity to learn from and about American volunteers and who we genuinely are as a people. It is in that learning that we all discover that we are far more alike than we are different; and it is through that discovery that friendships are formed.Friendship is crucial because friendship is the foundation for peace, and we all strive for peace.

Therefore, we renew our commitment to help you complete Project Peace; and I look forward to coming back to An Shang for the grand opening of this great school.

Thank you!
